Florence – The Art of Eating and Efficient Sightseeing

Today’s adventure brought us to the jaw-droppingly beautiful city of Florence. Our cruise docked in Livorno, which meant we had to make the classic tourist dash, an hour-plus train ride just to get into Florence, with limited time to squeeze in masterpieces, carbs, and maybe some shade.

Our first stop McDonald’s! We had to use the bathroom between myself, O and little cousin N it was a necessary stop. We had to buy something to use the toilet but turns out Mcdonald’s also has those espresso milky slushies!

After our brief pot stop,we arrived in the historic city center to see the beautiful Duomo. Let’s just say this: photos don’t do it justice. The colors, the size, the detail, this thing is hands-down one of the most impressive churches I’ve ever seen. And I’ve seen a lot of churches.

Unfortunately, so had everyone else. The line to go inside was easily 2.5 hours long, and with the heat and our tight schedule, we made a tactical decision: skip the line, and eat some Italian food.

Thanks to AI (gotta love technology), we designed our own DIY food tour, and started strong at Panini Toscana, a popular spot with a line out the door. But a 20-minute wait for warm, fresh, flavor-packed sandwiches? Totally worth it. After that, we hit all the essentials: pizza and gelato, obviously.

Because we didn’t want to leave Florence without a touch of high culture, we squeezed in a visit to the Uffizi Gallery. Time was tight, so we split the squad: M and I used the gallery’s online map to hit the highlights like the speed-walking “art lovers”we are. Meanwhile, the true artists: Baba and O moved at a slower, more civilized pace, actually appreciating the art.

I think M was quite relieved to be with me; there’s only so much art this teen can take.

Florence was absolutely stunning and I wish we had more time. But we ate well, saw masterpieces, and no one had a meltdown in the heat!
