Iceland's second largest city is Akureyri, with a whopping 18,000 people! The days we visited Akureyri we struck out, as the weather was just slightly above freezing, but that didn't stop us from exploring and taking a midnight whale watching cruise.

We weren't sure what to expect regarding our whale watching experience. When we were in Portugal at this time last year, we went on dolphin expedition and saw tens of dolphins swimming and jumping all around us. Since Iceland is experiencing its midnight summer, there is essentially 24 hours of daylight and so our whale watching adventure set sail at 8:30pm. The boat did have an indoor cabin, but the best views of the humpback whales were from the top deck outside. The company gave all those interested waterproof overalls (with built in life jackets) for all guests to wear so we could all looked ridiculous together. While we didn't send tens of whales, we did see several humpbacks and got a glimpse of a puffin.
