No trip would be complete with some great food pictures. Although Wiener Schnitzel is technically synonymous with Austria, we tried and tasted two awesome places. The first was Max and Moritz a Kreuberg restaurant from 1899 in an old wooden cellar. We ordered one large Schnitzel and one Käsespeitzel aka German macaroni and cheese. Both girls were skeptical of trying a different version of Schnitzel and Mac and cheese but were pleasantly surprised.
Last night we tried Schnitzelei, a newer restaurant to the Schnitzel scene in Mitte. We sat down and they gave us welcome complimentary beers and juice for the girls. We ordered German tapas (who knew German and tapas went together !)
For our mains the girls got kid wiener Schnitzel (still huge !), and we shared the adult one.
The food was delicious and the service was awesome. We loved being in Kreuzberg, but after enjoying the evening in Mitte; I think we found our new favorite spot.
Outside of the schnitzel, the girls tried Currywurst, pieces of sausage cut up, drizzled with ketchup (thinner and sweeter than Heinz) and sprinkled with curry powder. O’s first response was, “this kind of tastes like shwarma.”
For sweets, they of course had a Berliner, and gelato because even though we aren’t in Italy, it seems every European city has adopted gelato as their popular dessert. One of our
gelato stops was at Amorino Gelato in Hackescher markt where they shape your ice cream into a flower.
